Albany State, Fort Valley to battle in 11th Fountain City Classic

November 8, 2000

Two of the biggest rivals in black college football history, the Albany State University Golden Rams and the Fort Valley State University Wildcats, will go to war in the 11th Annual Fountain City Classic (FCC) on Saturday, Nov. 11. Set to kickoff at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ga., the FCC is touted as one of the biggest and best black college football classics. The Golden Rams enter the game with a 3-6 record, after losing a heartbreaker to Morehouse College, 13-12. The Wildcats currently hold a 7-3 overall record.

This year's game is the 54th meeting of the ASU Golden Rams and the FVSU Wildcats since 1945, and the 11th meeting of the two teams in the FCC. FVSU leads the series 30-20-3 and ASU leads the FCC series 7-3. The first meeting of the two schools was in 1945, when the FVSU Wildcats beat the ASU Golden Rams 27-21. The two schools did not play each other in 1946 and 1947. Last year, the Golden Rams defeated the Wildcats 24-21 in the FCC game.

While the rivalry between the two teams spans more than half a century, FCC officials moved the game to Columbus in 1990, a regional center, to make it a weekend event full of classic activities, said State Rep. Calvin Smyre, chairman of the FCC, Inc.

"It makes great business sense to bring this gathering and game to Columbus," Smyre said. "There are a lot of alumni located in and around Columbus and they are loyal football fans."

Ted Pooler, of the FCC Local Host Committee, said, "With proceeds going to the schools, more funds can be generated from a larger crowd in attendance at a larger facility. It's a win-win situation for the city of Columbus and the schools. Hotels are full and people are having a great weekend."

The FCC activities kickoff with a news conference and media luncheon on Nov. 8 and ends with an after-game party on Nov. 11. A schedule of activities is listed below.

Tickets for the FCC are $20 for limited reserve seats; $15 in advance and $18 at the game for adults; $8 in advance and $10 at the gate for children and other college students; and $6 in advance and $10 at the gate for ASU and FVSU students with valid identification. Tickets are on sale on campus at the ASU Business Office and Post Office, Odyssey Records, Connie's Corner, R&S Sports, Owens Sporting Goods, June Bug's Grocery Store, Jaxx Beer and Wine Dougherty County Credit Union and National Package Store.
