West Virginia State fails in bid for regional baseball titleMay 18, 2001West Virginia State won and lost games Friday resulting in elimination from the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Baseball Regionals. In the first game of the day at 9:30 a.m., the Yellow Jackets earned a 6-2 victory over Concord, breaking a four-game losing streak over the last two years. WVSC scored six runs on an error, an RBI single from both Sam Gerkin and David Smith, a sacrifice fly from Dale Johnson, and a two RBIdouble from Tom Pearce in the bottom of the second. Concord had a late rally in the top of the eighth with Toby Legacy and Nate Gladwell scoring CC'stwo runs. Pitcher Scott Patterson earned the win for West Virginia State and Concord's Kevin McClung takes the loss on the mound. As a result of the victory, WVSC advanced to Game 5, taking on the loser of the Kutztown/Slippery Rock game. In the 4:30 p.m. contest, Slippery Rock advanced to the championship round with the 8-4 victory over West Virginia State, thus eliminatingthe Yellow Jackets from the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional. Kevin Dvorchak (3-2) pitched 8.2 strong innings before getting into a jam in theninth. West Virginia State rallied for four runs, all with two outs, but Brett Livingston relieved Dvorchak to get the final out and the save. Dvorchak allowedjust four hits before giving up seven base knocks in the ninth. Slippery Rock scored twice in the third on a two-run single by Ben Marzullo. The Rockextended its lead with an RBI single by Steve Wolota in the sixth, a two-run single by Marzullo in the seventh and a bases-clearing double in the eighth byLouie Squatrito. Marzullo was 3-for-5 with four RBI. Wolota was 3-for-5, while Jeff Donatelli scored three runs. West Virginia State had three playerswith two hits apiece, David Smith, Tom Pearce and Gerrad Talkington. Scott Patterson had two RBI. Dana Samples (4-2) was the losing pitcher.
