Virginia rivals grab second round leads in MEAC Track Championships
Hampton leads Norfolk in men's division' Norfolk tops in women's division

Tallahassee, FL - Chesapeake Bay area schools Hampton University and Norfolk State University have the lead after Day Two of the 2001 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Pete Griffin Track Complex in Tallahassee, Friday.

Hampton's men scored 35 points on opening day, highlighted by 22 points from the men's decathlon, as Travis Ridley, Randy Ashton and Isaac Hilton went 1-2-4 in the eight-man field to vault the Pirates past archrival Norfolk State (26). North Carolina A&T's men were a close third with 24 points with Morgan State fourth (20).

On the women's side, Norfolk State soared to the head of the pack in the first day of track competition, scoring 35 points for a double-digit lead over second-place Bethune-Cookman (20), third place Morgan State (12) and fourth place South Carolina State (10).

The defending champions in both divisions, Florida A&M placed far back after the second day. The men were tied for fifth with Bethune-Coo,man (16), while the women's club was also in fifth with eight (8) points.

Saturday's action begins at 9:00 a.m. with field events (men's pole vault, men's and women's triple jump, women's shot put, men's discus, women's high hump and men's and women's javelin).

Finals in the running events begin at 12:45 p.m. with the 400 meter relay and will conclude with the 1600 meter relay at 3:05 p.m.
