Pirate netters to face Blue Devils in First Round PlayMay 3, 2001Hampton, Va. -The Pirates of Hampton University will face the #16 Blue Devils of Duke University in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Tournament, May 12-13, in Durham, North Carolina. The Pirates, who finished the season with a 19-5 overall record and 13-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), will participate in their second NCAA Division I Tennis Tournament since joining the MEAC in 1996. In 1999, the Pirates participated in their first Division I national tournament, losing in the first round to Alabama. Under the direction of Head Coach Dr. Robert Screen, the Pirates have dominated the MEAC, winning five championships (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001) in their first six years. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Screen has guided the Pirates to an impressive 719-134 (.843%) career record, making him the most successful African-American tennis coach in the nation and one of the best collegiate tennis coaches of all time. In his 31 years of service, he has accumulated 25 conference championships in two national divisions and two programs, men and women's. Before moving up to Division I, the Pirates won 22 consecutive CIAA conference championships and two Division II national championships (1976 and 1988), becoming the only Historical Black College (HBCC) to win a national tennis title.
