Albany State University Golden Rams announce 2001 football schedule

Albany State University (ASU) Athletics Director Dan Land and Head Football Coach James "Mike" White have announced the 2001 Golden Rams football schedule.

Albany State's 11-game slate includes four home games at Hugh Mills Memorial Stadium, two football classics and three games against teams from different conferences, Land said.

"The Golden Rams' season promises to be exciting this year," Land said. "We had some disappointments last season, but we are looking forward to playing great football in 2001."

The Golden Rams will kickoff the season on the road against Gulf South Conference foe, Valdosta State University Blazers, on Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. in Valdosta, and face the Miles College Golden Bears in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game on Sept. 1 at 1:30 p.m. (CST) in Fairfield, Ala. ASU will hit the road to Carrollton to face another Gulf South Conference foe, State University of West Georgia Braves on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.

ASU has added a new team to this year's schedule, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (CIAA) Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls of Charlotte, N.C. The Sept. 15 game, set to start at 7 p.m., will be the first meeting of the teams.

The Golden Rams will travel to Jackson, Tenn., to face the Lane College Dragons in an SIAC match-up on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. (CST) before meeting the Savannah State University Tigers in the Third Annual Music City Classic in Macon, Ga. on Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. The game is sponsored annually by the 100 Black Men of Macon. ASU will host the Tuskegee University Tigers on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.

Albany State will celebrate Homecoming '01 against the Thorobreds of Kentucky State University on Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m. before traveling to Atlanta to face the Clark Atlanta University Panthers on Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m. ASU's final home game will pit theGolden Rams against the Morehouse College Tigers in an SIAC contest on Nov. 3 at 1 p.m.

The Golden Rams will finish its regular season on Nov. 13 in the 12th Annual Fountain City Classic against conference rival, Fort Valley State University Wildcats. The game starts at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ga.
