Hampton wins second straight All-Sport Survey

Hampton University has won the 23rd Annual Virginia Sports Information Director's Association Division I All-Sport Survey for the second consecutive year. The survey began in 1979 and included winning percentages of those sports with NCAA sponsored championships.

Hampton won 62% of their intercollegiate athletic contests during the 2000-01 athletic season posting a mark of 133-81. The Pirates edged out the University of Virginia, which finished with a winning percentage of .611.

Hampton's men's teams won 75% (51-17) of its contests including Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in both basketball, which led the state with 25 victories, and tennis, whose 19 wins were also tops in Virginia.

Led by the 13-5 tennis team, the Lady Pirates placed fourth among the Commonwealth's Division I women with a winning percentage of .562 (82-64). Hampton's women captured the MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championship and Northern Division title in softball.

There are 13 Division I programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Old Dominion has won 10 overall titles, including seven of the first eight. Virginia has come out on top seven times followed by James Madison with three, Hampton with two and George Mason with one overall title.
