Coppin State names Patrick Bailey as women's track coach Hicks to continue as men's coachJune 12, 2001BALTIMORE - Coppin State College has announced the hiring of Patrick Baileyas head women's cross country/track and field coach. Bailey takes over for Carl Hicks, who for the past two years has split duties between the men's and women's programs and will continue to coach the men's team. "I have confidence in Patrick's abilities as a coach and administrator to doan outstanding job with the women's program," said Ron "Fang" Mitchell,athletics director and head men's basketball coach at Coppin. "This movealso allows Coach Hicks to focus on the men's team and build on the successthat they had this past season." Bailey, also the director of housing and residence life at Coppin, returns tothe collegiate coaching ranks after a five-year absence.A former member of the Bahamas national team, he has helped produce 10All-Americans and 25 national qualifiers during his coaching career. He was assistant track coach at Morgan State University from 1991-1996,specializing in short sprints and throwing and jumping events. He alsoserved as student assistant and graduate assistant coach at Wayland BaptistUniversity after completing his athletic eligibility at the school. Bailey has also served as a coach or consultant to five Olympians, includingsprinter Ken Brokenburr, who won a gold medal at the 2000 Olympics as amember of the U.S. 4x100 relay team.Among his other clients to earn Olympic berths are Troy McIntosh (Bahamas,400m and 4x400), Andrea Thomas (Jamaica, 4x400) and Dwight Ferguson(Bahamas, 4x100). Prior to coming to Coppin in 1998 as an administrator, Bailey also worked forseven years in various capacities at Morgan State in the residence lifedepartment, most recently as coordinator of housing services.Bailey received his bachelor's degree in business administration in 1989 fromWayland Baptist. During his collegiate athletic career, first at LorasCollege and later at Wayland Baptist, he was a three-time NAIA nationalqualifier in the javelin.He earned his master of business administration degree from Morgan in 1994. |
