Benedict College reschedules homecoming
Location still not determined

June 9, 2001

In order to avoid a conflict with homecoming at South Carolina State, Benedict College has rescheduled its homecoming football game to October 20. The Tigers had originally scheduled their homecoming game against Miles College on October 27 but when they learned that nearby South Carolina State had also scheduled their homecoming game for the same date, Benedict made the switch.

"Both schools have a lot of fans who want to support both programs, and we were happy that we were in position to change it," Benedict athletics director Willie Washington told The State newspaper in Columbia. "[South Carolina] State didnŐt have the flexibility in its schedule to make a change in the same relative time frame."

Benedict's game against Stillman College will now be designated as homecoming but the location is still undecided.

Last year Benedict moved its homecoming game to Charlotte as an expression of support for the NAACP boycott against in-state sporting events in South Carolina. The Tigers played Elizabeth City State in Charlotte's Memorial Stadium.

Although the school still supports the boycott, a final decision has not been made regarding whether this year's homecoming game will be played at Bolden Stadium in Columbia, Benedict's regular home field.

"The athletic committee discussed (the homecoming game) at its recent meeting and made a recommendation to the president," said Washington. "It's in his hands now, and he'll decide what course of action we take."
