June 8, 2001

ALCORN STATE, Miss. - Former Alcorn State football great Steve McNair will be featured on ESPN's "The Life" which is scheduled to air on Saturday, June 16th at 9 a.m. The quarterback led the Tennessee Titans to the playoffs for the past two seasons while earning home field advantage throughout this past year's playoffs.

McNair led the Tennessee Titans to the AFC (American Football Conference) Central Championship with a 13-3 record. McNair finished the 2000 regular season with 2,865 yards passing by completing 249 of 396 attempts including 15 touchdowns along with rushing 70 times for 404 yards while averaging 5.8 yards per carry.

While at Alcorn State from 1991 to 1994, McNair set several NCAA records while being the only player in NCAA history to gain over 16,000 yards of total offense (16,823) during a career. Another record is that he averaged 400.55 yards of total offense per game for his career. In addition, he led the Braves to both Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and NCAA Division I-AA playoff berths in 1992 and 1994.

McNair finished his career with 928 completions on 1,673 attempts (55.5%) for 14,496 yards passing with 119 touchdowns and 58 interceptions. He also rushed for 2,327 yards and 33 touchdowns on 375 attempts. He is the only player in SWAC history to be named its Offensive Player-of-the-Year all four years.

In 1994, McNair finished third in the voting for the Heisman Trophy which is given to the nation's top college football player. He won both the Walter Payton Award (which is given to the nation's top Division I-AA football player), the Eddie Robinson Award (which is given to the nation's top Black College football player) and the Paul "Tank" Younger Trophy.

In 1995, McNair was the third player overall and first quarterback selected in the 1995 NFL Draft by the (then) Houston Oilers. Alcorn State University has honored him by retiring his number nine jersey along with naming the street which leads to Jack Spinks Stadium "Steve McNair drive." His jersey is the second in the school's history to have been retired by the University in which Jack Spinks' number 54 jersey was the first to be retired.
