John I. Davis named new coach, athletics director at Albany StateJune 4, 2001Albany State University announced the appointment of a new athletics director and head men's basketball coach at a news conference held June 1 at the University's HPER Complex. Dr. Portia Holmes Shields named former Monroe High School principal, John Ira Davis, Jr., to both positions, effective July 1. "We are delighted to welcome Mr. Davis and believe that he will enhance our athletics program. With his years of educational leadership and accomplishments in sports, we are certain that our ASU Rams will soar to the top of their game," Shields said. Davis is not new to Albany State University. His credentials include playing college basketball at Albany State in the 1960s, and later returning to coach while posting a perfect regular season record. He brings to the University almost 20 years of coaching experience, which includes head basketball and volleyball coaching for the women's teams at Albany State and assistant basketball coach for the men's teams. Davis is a proven leader, having served as captain of his nationally-ranked college basketball team, and as coach of the only undefeated women's basketball team at Albany State. In 1987, he lead the Lady Rams team to a 28-0 regular season. "As we strive to be the best, we are continually seeking the right talent to help our students reach excellence in academics and sports. We are pleased to have Mr. Davis as a member of the ASU family," Shields said.
