| Texas Southern Announces Assistant Mens Basketball Coaches July 3, 2001 Houston-TX - Texas Southern University men's basketball coach Ronnie Courtney has announced the hiring of his basketball staff. Joining the Tiger program will be assistant coaches John Howie and James Wilhelmi. "We are excited to have John and James join the Texas Southern Basketball family," said Courtney. Before coming to Texas Southern, Howie served as an assistant coach at Sugarland Willowridge High School in Houston, Texas from 1996-2001 under Courtney. He was instrumental in helping the Eagles win two consecutive 5-A state championships and built the program into a national contender. From 1993-96, Howie was the head coach of Presidio High School in Big Bend, Texas. A native of Wilmington, North Carolina, Howie earned his bachelor's degree from Southwest Texas State in 1992. Wilhemi joins the Tigers after serving as the number one assistant coach at the University of Maryland Eastern-Shore. In his first year at school, Wilhemi was instrumental in leading the Fighting Hawks to its first winning conference record in 10 years. Wilhemi also served stints at Hampton University (1998-2000), Northeastern Illinois University (1997-98), University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1995-97), University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (1994-95) and University of Wisconsin Center-Rock County (1993-94). He earned his Bachelors Degree in 1995 from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Masters of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1997. |
