MVSU names Nathaniel Kilbert to coach women's basketball and volleyball

July 18, 2001

ITTA BENA, MS - After helping guide Alcorn State University's women's basketball team to six regular-season championships, four tournament championships and two NCAA tournament berths, while compiling a 126-110 career record as the volleyball coach, Nathaniel Kilbert has been hired as the Mississippi Valley State University head women's basketball and volleyball coach.

His appointment is contingent upon approval by the Board of Trustees for the Mississippi State Institutions of Higher Learning.

Kilbert becomes just the second head coach in the 26-year history of the school's women's basketball program. He was hired two months after 25 year- veteran Jessie Harris ended his career in May of 2001.

Kilbert will rejoin the MVSU Athletics Department after a 10-year stint at in-state rival Alcorn State. At ASU, Kilbert was head coach Shirley Walker's right arm and he served also as the school's head volleyball coach since 1991.

Kilbert's was instrumental in guiding Alcorn to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances in 2000 and 2001, losing to eventual national champion Notre Dame in the opening round of this year's tourney. Kilbert's volleyball squads have consistently finished in the top half of the conference race for the past four seasons.

As a point guard at MVSU, Kilbert lettered four years under Lafayette Stribling, from 1982-1986. Kilbert was a heavy contributor during the Delta Devils' 1985- 86 SWAC tournament championship team. Upon graduating from MVSU in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science degree, Kilbert worked with Stribling as a student assistant. He moved on to Alcorn as a graduate assistant from 1987 to 1989, earning his Master of Science degree in Secondary Education in 1989 before returning to MVSU as an assistant to Harris from 1989 to 1991.
