Coppin State adds four to athletics staff

BALTIMORE - The addition of John Secord as assistant athletics director for compliance and three former athletes asassistant coaches are among several changes to the Coppin State College athletics department staff.Secord comes to Coppin from Towson University, where he served as director of compliance and education servicesfor two years.

A graduate of Keene State College and Franklin Pierce Law Center, where he earned his juris doctor degree, he alsoheaded the compliance offices at the America East Conference and the Mid-Continent Conference.

Three former athletes - Robert Carradine (wrestling), Leticia Madry (volleyball) and Patrick Simms (cross country andtrack and field) are returning to Coppin as assistant coaches.

During his senior year, Carradine finished with an 18-9 record at 134 lbs. and placed second at the Big Northeastern Conference and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships.As a sophomore, the Pemberton, NJ., native won his weight class at the 1993 MEAC tournament.

Madry, from Aberdeen, Md., played during the 1995 season, ranking second on the team in kills, assists and blocks.

Simms, a native ot Clarendon, Jamaica, was a standout sprinter for the Eagles. He still holds the school indoor record at 60 meters and was a member of four relay teams which set school marks.

A three-time MEAC All-Academic honoree, Simms completed his career in 1999.Coppin also named Kia Mason as assistant director of athletics communicationsMason is a recent graduate of Morgan State, having worked as a student assistant in the Bears' sports information office for four years. She also did internships at ESPN and Eton College, as well as with the Baltimore Bayrunners of the International Basketball League.

Michelle Dempsey was also appointed as office clerk for administrative services.
