Savannah State 2001 Football Schedule CompleteApril 3, 2001The Savannah State University Tiger football team will open the 2001 season facing the 2000 I-AA National Champion Georgia Southern Eagles in Statesboro, Georgia. The game is scheduled for September 1 at 7:00 p.m. Savannah State opened their season against the Eagles in Statesboro in 1993 and were defeated 35-3. Travel for the Tigers continues the second week of the 2001 season as they visit Orangeburg, South Carolina to face the I-AA South Carolina State University Bulldogs on September 8 at 6:00 p.m. SCSU defeated the Tigers, 42-26, last season in their first meeting since 1970. I-AA Bethune-Cookman College is next on the schedle for the Tigers. The felines travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on September 15 this season to tangle in the 9th Annual South Florida Classic in Lockhart Stadium. Game time is not yet decided. The Tigers have an idle week folowing the B-CC game, but when action resumes, Savannah State will meet the first of two division II opponents of the 2001 season. Arch rival Albany State University Golden Rams face the Tigers on September 29. The teams will play in Macon, Georgia in the 4th Annual Music City Classic at 4:00 p.m. in Henderson Stadium. The Rams defeated the Tigers, 27-13, in last year's classic. Theodore A Wright Stadium will be the site of the SSU meeting of their fourth division I-AA opponent this season. The 2001 home opener, schedled for a 1:30 kickoff on October 6th feature the Tigers hosting the Norfolk State University Spartans in the 8th Annual Joseph Turner Memorial Football Classic. The Morgan State University Bears will again host the SSU Tigers for their Homecoming Game this season. Savannah State, a 12-6 loser to the Bears last season, will travel to Baltimore, Maryland on October 13th for a 1:00 rematch. An SSU-Morris Brown division I-AA rematch is scheduled for 2:00 at Butler Stadium in Augusta, Georgia's 10th Annual CRSA Classic. The MBC Wolverines defeatd the Tigers in the 2000 meeting. Fort Valley State University, another division Ii rival, will host the Tigers in Fort Valley, Georgia on October 27th at 1:30 p.m. for the Wildcats 2001 Homecoming Game. SSU defeated Fort Valley, 37-13, last season in Savannah. Savannah State meets I-AA Delaware State University for the first time ever when the Hornets invade Ted Wright Stadium on November 3rd at 1:30 p.m. for the Tiger 2001 Homecoming celebration. The season finale is on November 10th at 1:30 p.m. in Ted Wright Stadium when the Tigers host the I-AA Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb University.
