NCAA Leadership Institute grads include eight from HBCUs

Eight graduates or current employees of HBCUs graduated in the 2008-09 class of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males and Females. The commencement, culminating a week-long intensive program that capped off a 12-month program, was held this past Thursday at the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis.

Amongst the eight graduates, five currently work at a HBCU conference office or institution and the remaining four are graduates of HBCUs.

The graduates include:
Mary Hill, Internal Operations/Special Events & Assistant Academic Enhancement Coordinator, South Carolina State University
Sherie Cornish, Associate AD For Internal Operations/SWA, Norfolk State University
Chevonne Mansfield, Assistant Sports Information Director, Howard University
Harry Stinson III, Director of Championships, Communications & Marketing, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Shera White, Director of Public Relations, Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association
Gordon Bayne, Assistant Athletics Director-Event Management, UCLA (Graduate of Hampton Univ.)
Derrick Magee, Associate AD/Chief Business Officer, University of Cincinnati (Graduate of Florida A&M Univ.)
Omar Banks, Assistant AD/Business Affairs, University of Cincinnati (Graduate of North Carolina Central Univ.)

The 12-month program emphasized leadership and administration, human resource management, finance and fundraising, booster, public and media relations, and leadership during four weekend sessions and one week-long meeting in Indianapolis. The institute is facilitated by a diverse group of leaders in business, higher education and intercollegiate athletics.

The program was established in 2001 following a recommendation from the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. It is designed to address the shortage of senior-level ethnic minority females and males in athletics at the campus and conference levels.
