Virginia State 54, Lincoln (PA) 0
October 25, 2008
Virginia State University's Babaside Onadipe came off the bench to replace the injured Taron Hampton, and rushed for 154 yards on 28 carries in his first college game to power VSU to a 54-0 win over Lincoln University on Saturday in Rogers Stadium.
Onadipe, a 5-10 185 lb. freshman from Colonial Heights, Va., also scored his first touchdown of his college career when he powered the ball from one yard out in the fourth quarter.
The game itself was marked with several outstanding performances.
Hampton, who is trying to become the CIAA Rookie of the Year, reeled off 118 yards on 15 carries to set the all-time VSU single-season rushing record. Hampton, who also scored a touchdown, now has 1,100 yards on the season, breaking the old single-season mark of 1,020 set by Von Allen in 1986. Hampton, however, had to leave the game late in the second quarter due to a high ankle sprain.
Senior Jerome Choice, a 6-3 wide receiver from Richmond, Va., caught three touchdown passes to give him 15 touchdown receptions in his career at VSU, tying him for sixth place among the all-time VSU leaders in touchdown receptions. Choice is now tied with Jerome Jeter, who caught 15 touchdowns from 2002-05.
The win raised VSU's record to 5-4 overall and insured the Trojans of their first non-losing season since 2005. VSU is also 4-2 in CIAA play, and face Bowie State University in the 2008 season finale next week in Bowie, Md.
Lincoln falls to 1-8 on the season.
