RALEIGH, NC – Fayetteville State University survived 20-16 over Saint Augustine’s College in a tight CIAA football game at Broughton High School Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 25).
The game ended when Adrian Horton of the Broncos intercepted a Hail Mary pass in the end zone as time expired. It was Horton’s third interception and the fifth for the Broncos in the game.
With the win, the Broncos (7-2 overall, 5-1 CIAA) remained tied with Shaw atop the Western Division with one game left in the regular season. The loss eliminated the Falcons (3-6 overall, 2-4 CIAA) from the division race.
Tight end JaTaurus White (Miami, FL) scored twice for the Falcons including a four-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to pull the Falcons within 20-16. The Falcons moved to the Broncos’ 30-yard line twice in the final 6:25 of the fourth quarter but failed to score.
White also caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Kris Brownlee (Philadelphia, PA) in the second quarter. Adison Daniels (Raleigh, NC) added the extra point for a 7-0 Falcon lead.
But the Broncos scored twice in a three-minute span of the second quarter for a 14-7 lead. Quarterback Ben Williams scored on a five-yard run with 4:19 remaining, and Elijah Sessoms found Sidney McClettie for a 35-yard touchdown pass with 1:15 left after receiving a lateral from Williams. The Falcons pulled within 14-10 with 20 seconds left in the second quarter on Daniels’ 36-yard field goal.
A three-yard run by Calvin Harris gave the Broncos a 20-10 lead in the third quarter. The Falcons answered with White’s touchdown run in the third quarter but failed to score again.
The Falcons committed six turnovers including five interceptions by Brownlee, a freshman quarterback. The Broncos turned one interception and a fumble by the Falcons into 13 points.
Williams fumbled twice which led to a Falcon touchdown and field goal. Overall, the Broncos fumbled three times.
The Broncos gained 300 yards of total offense and won time of possession 35:32 to 24:28. They ended drives in Falcon territory 11 of 18 possessions but the Falcon defense made key stops to keep the game close. Linebacker Stephan Stanback (Temple Hills, MD) led the Falcons with 10 tackles while defensive end Marcus Crump (Pittsboro, NC) added eight tackles including three sacks and defensive tackle Phillip Stevenson (Statesville, NC) added eight tackles and two sacks.
Richard Medlin led the Broncos with 94 yards on 22 carries, and McClettie caught four passes for 63 yards and a touchdown. Damon Gibson (Suitland, MD) of the Falcons had two catches for 67 yards including a 56-yard reception which set up the first touchdown for the Falcons.
The Falcons recorded five quarterback sacks while the Broncos had six sacks. Terrel Allen led the Broncos with 11 tackles including two sacks.
The Falcons host Chowan University on Homecoming/Senior Day next Saturday (Nov. 1) at Broughton High School Stadium. The CIAA contest, the last regular-season game for the Falcons, starts at 4 p.m.
