Bowie State 21, Saint Paul's 7

(SOUTH HILL, VA) Senior Isaac Redman rushed for a game and season high 115 yards and redshirt freshman Travis Reed racked up a game-high 11 tackles, leading Bowie State to a 21-7 victory of St. Paul’s College. The win improves the BSU Bulldogs record to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the CIAA.

Bowie State’s defense was huge this afternoon with sophomores Justin Carey and Kyle Moore adding 10 tackles each for the Bulldogs. As a team, Bowie State rolled up 222 rushing yards, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. Freshman Michael Gagne had a great kicking day, leading the Bulldogs with a 44.8 yards punting average with his longest being 51 yards.

Bowie State’s Tristan Martin took a direct snap on fake punt and rumbled 51 yards to pay dirt with 2:38 left in the first quarter. Michael Gagne added the extra point, giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. St. Paul’s missed an opportunity to score before the half, but Nelson Davalos’ 31-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left.

Other than Martin’s first half output, senior quarterback Jason Scott completed 4-of-8 first half passes for 31 yards. Scott finished the game with 46 total passing yards, completing 5-of-12, was intercepted once and sacked twice. Freshman Clifton “Dominique” Budd led all receivers with 18 yards on three receptions, all in the first half.

St. Paul’s (4-4 / 2-3 in the CIAA) controlled the clock in the first half, keeping possession of the ball 18:21 while holding Bowie State to 11:39. Micah Brown led the St. Paul’s Tigers offense in the first 30 minutes with 83 passing yards and Emory Addison caught two of those passes for 46 yards.

Nicholas Bethea rushed for a 5-yard touchdown run and Davalos converted the extra point, tying the score at 7-7 at the 8:27 mark in the third quarter. Bowie State sophomore Rodney Webb scored his fourth touchdown of the season, scampering 36 yards with 6:25 remaining in the third and Gagne added the PAT, giving the advantage back to the visiting Bulldogs at 14-7. Webb wrapped up the game with 10 carries for a total of 61 yards. Isaac Redman recorded his third touchdown of the year with 15.6 seconds left in the third quarter, pounding in from eight yards out to cap off a 9-play, 79 yard drive. Gagne’s extra point increased Bowie State’s lead to 21-7.

Brown threw for a game-high 138 yards, completing 10-of-21 passes to lead the St. Paul’s offense. Emory Addison was Brown’s main target, catching four passes for a game-high 69 yards.

Bowie State will host the Panthers of Virginia Union – Saturday, October 25th at 1 p.m. while St. Paul’s travels to Elizabeth City State.
