Shaw 41, Bowie State 10

Durham, NC - In true championship form, the Shaw Bears (3-2, 2-0) defeated the Bulldogs (2-2, 1-1) of Bowie State University at Durham County Memorial Stadium before a crowd exceeding 4,000. Dreary gray skies overhead didn't dampen the execution or confidence of the reigning CIAA champions as they managed big numbers each quarter of the game.
With 13:16 minutes left in the first quarter, Shaw capitalized on a safety and put the first points on the board 2-0. Lenell King (SR/WR/Mound Bayou, MS) caught an 82 yard pass from quarterback Travis Robinson (JR/QB/Rockingham,NC) with 4:10 left on the clock. Caleb Reid (FR/PK/Virconia, NC) added the extra point and the Bears went up 9-0. Into the second quarter, Anthony Green of Bowie State caught a 15 yard pass from Jason Scott and Michael Gagne added the extra point to put 7 points on the board for Bowie State.
With 11:27 in the second quarter, King caught his second touchdown pass from Robinson. Reid once again made the extra point sending the Bears further ahead-7. Bowie State answered back with a 20 yard field goal adding three more points to their score. With no time left on the clock at the end of the first half, Reid scored a 22 yard field goal and the halftime score was the Bears 19, Bowie 10.
Shaw answered early in the third quarter with a safety by Martellus Braxton (SR/OLB/Lynchburg, VA). Jayson Royal (FR/WR/Baton Rouge, LA) caught a 12 yard pass from quarterback Marcus Brooks (SO/QB/Macon, GA) and Reid kicked the extra point sending the Bears up 28-10. With 14:56 on the clock in the fourth quarter, Lincoln Shepherd (FR/PK/Mobile, AL) kicked a 34 yard field goal and the Bears continued to expand their points to 31 over the Bulldogs. The green shoes of Shepherd continued to be his trademark as he scored a 22 yard field goal. Frederick Holliday (FR/TB/Baton Rouge, LA) added the last touchdown of the game with a 16 yard run and Reid finalized the score with the extra point. The Bears finished with an amazing score of 41 -10 over the Bowie State Bulldogs.
Darrell Asberry, Head Coach of Shaw University stated, "This is an important win for us towards clenching the division title. The team put in extra effort in our intense practice sessions and their efforts were rewarded in their outstanding performance tonight."
The Bears will take on cross town rival, Saint Augustine's College on Saturday, October 4th at Broughton High School at 4:00 PM in Raleigh, NC.
