Bowie State 15, Livingstone 10

(SALISBURY, NC) Bowie State redshirt freshman Tariq Jones rushed for a season-high 147 yards, helping the Bulldogs edge Livingstone 15-10. The win improves BSU’s Bulldogs to 2-1 overall (1-0 in the CIAA). The loss drops Livingstone to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Livingstone’s Chris Peoples scored the games first points on a 79-yard reception from Steven Williams. Dominic Piicitello kicked the extra point, giving the home team a 7-0 lead. Bowie State’s Tariq Jones cut the score to 7-6 at the 4:17 mark of the opening quarter, rushing for a two-yard touchdown.

Piicitello booted a 39-yard field with 5:01 left in quarter two to give Livingstone a 10-6 advantage. Anthony Green shifted the advantage to Bowie State with 1:27 remaining before halftime, out jumping a Blue Bears defender in the corner of the end zone and recorded a six-yard touchdown. Michael Gagne converted the extra point, making the score 13-10 Bulldogs at the half.

The Bowie State Bulldogs picked up two easy points with 9:14 left in the game when a bad center snap sailed over the head of the Livingstone punter. As a result of the safety Bowie State, broadened the margin to 15-10.

Bowie State’s defense played extremely well, holding Livingstone to only three yards rushing on 25 attempts. Alvin Cox and Kyle Jackson led BSU’s Bulldogs with eight tackles each. Cox also led Bowie State with two sacks for 18 yards. Penalties were huge for the Bowie State, as the Bulldogs were flagged 12 times for 105 yards.

Livingstone quarterback Steven Williams led the Blue Bears on offense with 179 passing yards, completing 12-of-32 passes and one touchdown. Peoples caught two of those passes for 87 yards.

Bowie State University will return to the State of North Carolina next weekend, this time traveling to Raleigh to face the Bears of Shaw University. The game will be played at Durham County Stadium with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
