Saint Augustine's 33, Chowan 31

RALEIGH, NC – Sophomore tailback Walter Sanders (Baltimore, MD) rushed for a school-record 262 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries to spark Saint Augustine’s College past Chowan University 33-31 Saturday (Nov. 1) at Broughton High School Stadium in the final regular-season game for both teams.
The Falcons improved to 4-6 overall including 3-4 in the CIAA after winning on Homecoming/Senior Day in front of 5,018 fans. The Hawks dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the CIAA. The Falcons finished third and the Hawks sixth in the CIAA Western Division.
Sanders scored on touchdown runs of 44, 33 and 17 yards for the Falcons, who rushed for 315 of their 426 yards of total offense. Freshman quarterback Kris Brownlee (Philadelphia, PA) of the Falcons completed 12 of 18 passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns.
Sanders broke the record he set two weeks ago against Livingstone College when he rushed for 153 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown.
Senior defensive tackle Marcus Kennedy (Georgetown, SC) recorded his second sack on fourth down at midfield to stop a potential Chowan scoring drive with 32 seconds left in the game. Junior defensive tackle Phillip Stevenson (Statesville, NC) also had two sacks for the game and led the Falcons with 10 tackles including 3.5 tackles for loss while Kennedy had 3.0 tackles for loss for the Falcons, who held a good Chowan offense to 263 total offensive yards. Jomo Brown of the Hawks had 10 tackles which tied Stevenson for the game-high total.
The Falcons scored 19 unanswered points in the third quarter to erase a 24-14 halftime deficit. They led 33-24 late in the third quarter on Sanders’ 17-yard run. The Hawks answered with a 17-yard run by J.J. Spates early in the fourth quarter for the final score.
Quarterback C.J. Westler completed 16 of 29 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns while Gerald Nixon caught seven passes for 75 yards and one touchdown for the Hawks.
The Hawks scored 21 of their 24 first-half points off three Falcon fumbles. Their touchdowns included a Kevin Cheek one-yard fumble return, a 22-yard pass from Westler to Gerald Nixon and a 6-yard Westler pass to Eddie Coard. The Falcons’ first-half points came on a 10-yard pass from Brownlee to senior tight end Jabre Green (Pittsboro, NC) and Sanders’ 44-yard run.
Sanders scored two of the Falcons’ three third-quarter touchdowns including a 33-yard run and the 17-yarder. The other touchdown was Brownlee’s 17-yard pass to freshman wide receiver Jamain Smith.
