Bowie State 21, Virginia State 16

(BOWIE, Md.) Senior Isaac Redman rushed for a team-high 103 yards and scored two touchdowns to help lead Bowie State to a 21-16 season finale victory over visiting Virginia State. The win wraps up the BSU Bulldogs season record at 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the CIAA.

Virginia State (5-5 / 4-3 in the CIAA) jumped out to quick 7-0 lead early in the opening quarter when Babaside Onadipe scored from one-yard out at the 11:46 mark. Justin parker added the extra point to give the Trojans a 7-0 advantage. BSU’s Redman scored his first touchdown of the afternoon with 6:45 left in the first quarter, running over VSU defenders from 23 yards out. Freshman Michael Gagne converted the extra point to tie things up at 7-7.

Bowie State freshman Clifton Budd ignited the 2,316 in attendance at the 8:21 mark of quarter two, returning a VSU punt 73 yards for touchdown and Gagne’s extra point shifted the advantage over to the Bulldogs at 14-7. Virginia State’s Justin Parker trimmed the Trojans deficit to 14-10 just before halftime, booting a 27-yard field goal.

Neither team scored in the third period but one glaring stat was Bowie State’s control of the clock, eating up 10:09 compared to 4:51 for Virginia State. Redman punished Virginia State defenders again in the fourth quarter, pounding in for a six-yard touchdown run, padding the Bulldogs lead at 21-10. Virginia State scored their final points with 1:41 left in the game on an Edward Davis 10-yard pass to Alfonso Custis.

Senior Jason Scott completed 8-of-11 passes for 76 yards and Budd was his main target hauling in six for 67 yards. Scott also rushed for 34 yards and sophomore Rodney Webb added another 32 rushing yards for Bowie State. Senior Jonathan Edwards recorded his third double-digit tackles game of the year, racking up 10 solo tackles. Sophomore Terence Peete tied his season-high of eight tackles and senior Tristan Martin picked up six tackles for the Bulldogs.

Virginia State was led by Onadipipe’s game-high 142 rushing yards. Davian Richards led the Trojans receivers with six catches for 65 yards. Leland DePriest paced the Virginia State defense with 10 total tackles and Donnie Avant along with LaQuentin Milo added seven and six tackles respectively.
