SC State 79, Florida Atlantic 78

Boca Raton, Fl--SC State women's basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak as they defeated Florida Atlantic University (FAU) by one, 79-78, in a non-conference match-up at the FAU Arena in Boca-Raton, FL.

After exchanging baskets for the first five minutes, SC State took control of the game jumping ahead of FAU by ten, 32-22, midway thru the half. The Owls' managed to pull within five late in the first half but the Lady Bulldogs offense remained solid as they quickly extended their lead to 11. A shot at the buzzer by the Owls' Brittany Bowe cut the Lady Bulldogs lead to single digits at the half, 47-38.

SC State (3-6) scored the first two baskets of the second half, extending their lead to 13 points, 51-38. FAU (3-8) then put together a 20-6 run over the next nine minutes to tie the game at 57- 57. The teams exchanged baskets over the next five minutes with neither team taking more than a three-point lead. The Owls went up on SC State by five, 73-68, with just over two minutes remaining but the Lady Bulldogs pulled within two, 73-71, at the 1:14 mark. The Owls' once again extended its lead to five, 76-71, with 44 seconds remaining before SC State closed the game with an 8-2 run, including a game-winning free-throw by junior Kristin Johnson, to secure the 78-79 victory thus handing FAU its five straight lost.

Junior Sophilia Hipps and senior Marie Reid each eclipsed the 20 point mark in the victory as they scored 23 and 22 points respectively. The Lady Bulldogs had three players to score in double-figures as Raina Chambers contributed 10 points in the contest. Reid and Chambers each pulled in six rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Owls had four players to score in double-figures led by Carla Stubbs with 21. Jessica Knurick and Erica Caldwell scored 13 each and Candace Lambert scored 10 points in the loss.

SC State will travel to Durham, NC this Friday, Jan. 2 to take on the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University.
