Arkansas-Pine Bluff 65, Miss Valley State 52

January 3, 2009

Pine Bluff, Ark.---The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes opened conference play tonight with a gut wrenching, 65-52, loss to the Lady Lions of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

In a game that would prove to be a game of short runs the Devilettes dominated most of the first half as they opened an, 11-4, lead to begin the game. Down by seven the Lady Lions went on a 9-to-4 run to get back in the game and eventually took a brief lead, 18-16, before the Devilettes regrouped for a, 23-21, halftime lead.

The second half saw Valley open a double digit lead on their hosts as they cruised out in front, 35-21, by the 14:06 mark. However, the Devilettes stingy defense, which caused 16 turnovers, became plagued by foul problems allowing the Lady Lions shooters to get warm and UAPB posted another run which Valley this time couldn’t answer.

The Devilettes (3-8, 0-1) received a total team effort tonight. Latasha Williams turned in nine points and eight rebounds. Michelle Massaga had eight points, five rebounds and four blocked shots, while Ashley Brown added eight points, six rebounds and three assists.

UAPB was lead by Ciara Shields 14 point, five rebounds effort. Shay Holmes turned in a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Arica Green added 13 points, seven rebounds with Tashayla Jackson chipping in 10 points.

The Devilettes will return to action next Saturday night when they open conference home play hosting the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M at 5:30 p.m.
