Alabama A&M 73, Grambling State 60

January 3, 2009

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Alabama A&M never trailed as the Lady Bulldogs broke open a tight contest with a huge second half run en route to a 73-60 win over Grambling State in women's basketball action on Saturday in Huntsville, Ala.

Grambling (2-9, 0-1 SWAC) fell behind early as Alabama A&M (3-8, 1-0 SWAC) opened the contest with a 12-3 run five minutes in but the Lady Tigers put together a 5-0 run of their own to reduce their deficit to 12-8 nearly four minutes later. However, Grambling would draw no closer than four points as AAMU claimed a 30-23 halftime advantage.

An early 6-0 run upped Alabama A&M's lead to 36-23 less than two minutes into the second stanza but Grambling fought back and closed to within six (39-33) at the 14:29 mark behind the strong play of forward Tenisha Shaw. Unfortunately, Grambling's good fortunes came to an end after the run as Alabama A&M upped its offensive production and went on a 15-6 surge to lead by 15 (54-39) with 10:02 left in regulation.

Grambling failed to regroup from the run as Alabama A&M led by as much as 17 points on several occasions from that point en route to spoiling the conference debut for GSU head coach Donnita Drain.

Senior forward Gabrielle Fleming led Grambling with 10 points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes of action. Sophomore forward Secrett Anderson followed with 10 points while sophomore forward Whitney Brown and sophomore point guard Rachelle Dobbins added six rebounds apiece.

The Lady Tigers will wrap-up their road trip on Monday night in Montgomery, Ala. as they take on Alabama State in a nationally televised contest on ESPNU beginning at 6 p.m.
