![]() Fayetteville State 77, Virginia Union 64 January 6, 2009 Richmond, VA - Fayetteville State University traveled to Richmond, Virginia and extended its win streak to four with a 77-64 victory over the Virginia Union (4-6, 1-3 CIAA). L’Oreal Price (Jr., Raleigh, NC) led the game with 20 points and five assists. In a game that had many spurts, the Lady Broncos (7-4 overall, 3-2 CIAA) capitalized on Virginia Union’s 34 turnovers for 29 points. Fayetteville State gained advantage of a first half that had six lead changes and four ties by scoring 22 points in the paint and 12 off of turnovers. With a lead that would not get any higher than six points, the Lady Broncos led at the half 35-29. In the first minute of play in the second half, FSU doubled it lead and maintain a safe cushion until the 2:30 mark. By then, a string of turnovers and fouls helped the Lady Panthers come with four (61-65). Down by four, VUU had the misfortune of committing eight personal fouls in the last segment of play that sent the Lady Broncos to the line 13 times. Shooting 63.2% from the charity stripe, FSU completed 10 of the 13 attempts to secure the win. In addition to the 20 points by Price, Chelsea Jeter (Jr., Baltimore, MD) muscled in 13 points along with Erica Gilley (So., Lexington, NC). Fayetteville State shot a dismal 37.7% from the floor. They out-rebounded the Lady Panthers 47-45 and committed 23 personal fouls. With a game total of 38 trips to the free throw line, FSU made 24 of them. Virginia Union ruined its chances of a comeback by mishandling the ball 34 times and being charged with 29 fouls. VUU shot 38.9% from the field and made 18 of 28 free throws for a 64.3 percentage. Fayetteville State University will meet Virginia State for the second time this season on Thursday, January 8. The game will be played on the campus of VSU with a 5:30 pm tipoff. The Lady Trojans won the first matchup 81-72. |
