Chicago State 115, NC Central 96

DURHAM, N.C. – Saturday night proved to be an offensive slugfest between Chicago State University and North Carolina Central University inside McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium with the visiting Cougars landing more blows during a 115-96 win over the Eagles.

Five players scored in double figures for Chicago State (9-8) with senior guard David Holston leading the way with a game-high 33 points, 22 of which came after intermission. The nation’s third-leading scorer, Holston also distributed a season-best 12 assists and collected three steals.

CSU senior guard John Cantrell poured in 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field, while making all four three-point attempts and all three free throws. Carl Montgomery and Mike Wilson contributed 11 points each, while Hajji Martin came off the bench to add 10 points.

NCCU (0-18) had three Eagles net double digits with rookie guard Jamar Briscoe scoring a team-best 32 points. Senior guard Bryan Ayala tallied a season-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Junior forward Joshua Worthy also reach a season-high with 15 points, while adding six boards, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

In his first start as an Eagle, freshman forward Nick Chasten collected four points, a team-high eight rebounds, five assists and a blocked shot. Sophomore point guard Michael Glasker continued to provide a spark off the bench for NCCU by recording seven points, six assists, two rebounds and two steals.

NCCU shot a season-best 46.4 percent (32-of-69) from the field, including 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from three-point land, and 84.0 percent (21-of-25) from the foul line.

The Cougars, on the other hand, shot 57.5 percent (42-of-73) from the floor, including 10-of-20 from long range, and 21-of-28 from the charity stripe (75.0 percent).

NCCU scored the first basket of the game for its only lead of the night. The Cougars received a three-pointer by Cantrell at 18:45 to put the visitors on top 3-2.

The Eagles trailed just 7-6 after a layup by Briscoe at 17:01, but CSU went on a 16-5 run to make the cushion 23-11 on a triple by Holston at 11:47.

CSU led 54-42 at halftime.

The Cougars scored the first 13 points of the second stanza to blow the game wide open.

CSU led by as much as 29 points, with the Eagles trimming the gap to 13 points (100-87) with 2:31 left, before the Cougars won by 19 points.

NCCU returns home on Wednesday, Jan. 14 to host Texas-Pan American at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles will have a rematch with Chicago State on Jan. 24 in the Windy City.
