Miss Valley State 68, Alabama A&M 62

Itta Bena, Miss.--- Julius Cheeks came ablaze for a team high 17 points as the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils melted away a 14 game losing streak in clinching a, 68-62, victory over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs in Valleys home conference opener.

Valley set the tone from the onset scoring on four of their first five possessions. And thanks largely impart to back to back three-point baskets from Cheeks and Shannon Behling the Delta Devils found themselves up, 9-0, after four minutes of play. The Delta Devils would go on to dominate the half allowing the Bulldogs to get no closer than three as they took a, 30-23, lead into the half.

In the second half it was all Valley as they never let up on the visiting Bulldogs. They opened their lead by as much as 11, 37-26, as well as on the boards where they out rebounded the Bulldogs, 45-33 en route to the victory.

The Delta Devils (1-14, 1-1), who had four players score in double figures, were by led by Eric Petty who quietly posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Behling added eight points and 11 rebounds. Dewayne Harmason had 14 points.

AAMU’s Trant Simpson led all scorers with 22 points. Corneluis Hester and John Smith had 10 points each. Smith also had eight rebounds.

Valley will return to action Monday night when they host the Hornets of Alabama State at 7:30 pm in the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex on the MVSU campus.
