Paine 95, Miles 86, 2OT

Fairfield, AL – The Miles College men’s basketball team went down in defeat at the hands of Paine College Lions this afternoon 95-86 in double overtime at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. The Golden Bears fell to 3-6; 3-3 in the SIAC and Paine moves to 2-6; 1-4 in the conference.

The game was tied 33-33 at the half on Miles hitting 40 percent of its shots, 33.3 percent from behind the arc and 62.5 percent shooting from the line. Paine hit 35.1 percent from the floor and 55.6 percent in free throws.

For the game, the Golden Bears hit 26-of-76 (34.2) shots from the floor, 8-of-25 (32.0) in 3-pointers and 68.4 percent (26-of-38) in free throws, while Paine would hit 40.8 percent (31-of-76) from the field and 28-of-43 (65.1) from the foul line.

Miles, Leon McKinney hit two 3-pointers to tie the game in regulation at 69-69 and another with 1.5 seconds left in the first overtime.

The Golden Bears out rebounded the Lions 58-51, while turning the ball over 23 times to Paine 17. Miles largest lead of 12 points came in the first half with 14:44 left and Paine got their biggest lead of 9 points in the second overtime period.

Senior guard Leon McKinney led the Golden Bears with a double-double in scoring with a team-high 23 points and game-high 14 rebounds, as he hit 8-of-25 shots, 3-of-10 threes and 4-of-7 from the free throw line. Flawaan Flaggs came off the bench to score 21 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, while hitting 12-of-14 free throws and Reggie Griffin had a game-high 11 assist and 6 points. Eddie Ishman added 17 points and 8 boards and Larry Swain chipped in 13 and 5 rebounds.

Julian English led the Lions with a game-high 35 points and Geno Green had a double-double 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Golden Bears will play Tuskegee University Tigers in Tuskegee, Alabama on Monday, January 5, 2009 at 7:30.
