![]() Virginia Union 73, Fayetteville State 58 January 6, 2009 Richmond, VA – After Fayetteville State defeated the Panthers in overtime earlier this season, the schedule has run its course for the rematch. Prior to the game in Barco-Stevens Gymnasium, administration held a dedication ceremony to name the newly painted court after the legendary Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dave Robbins. The Broncos held close (28-34) in the first half but wavered in the second from a nine minute scoring drought. Fayetteville State (8-3 Overall, 3-2 CIAA) succumbed to its worst loss of the season 73-58. Virginia Union (7-4 Overall, 4-1 CIAA) went on a 14-2 run during the Broncos drought. Darshawn Johnson (Sr., Brooklyn, NY), who finished with nine points, broke the run with 5:30 remaining in the game. Despite being down by 16 points with five minutes to go, the shooting woes continued for the Broncos as the Panthers reached its highest lead of 19 points with 2:18 on the clock. Malcolm Jay, a senior from Washington DC, led all FSU scorers with 12 points while Andy Gebu (Sr., Orlando, FL) also finished with nine points. The Broncos shot 47.2% in field goals and 38.9% in free throws. FSU went to the charity stripe 18 times during the game. FSU only made one of 15 field goals from behind the 3-point line and turned the ball over 21 times; which led to 26 points for Union. The dismantled Broncos held a slim 37-33 advantage over the Panthers in rebounds. Three Panthers scored in double figures. Braxton Byerson led all with 15 points along with his brother Brandon Byerson, who followed close with 13 points. Gregg Thorndique finished with 14 points. Fayetteville State will compete against Virginia State on Thursday, January 8 in Ettrick, VA. Live statistics will be provided through GameTracker on fsubroncos.com.
