Albany State women and Morehouse men take SIAC Cross Country Titles

Tucker, GA – Morehouse took home their 13th consecutive SIAC title and Albany State women’s team took home their 5th straight SIAC title at the 42nd Annual Men’s and 25th Annual Women’s SIAC Cross Country Championships during the October 19th Championship at Jim Miller Park in Marietta, GA. Benedict’s Emmanuel Kirwa took home the SIAC Most Valuable Runner award for his first place finish in the men’s division. For the second out of three years Llonisha Lee of Albany State was named the Women’s SIAC Most Valuable Runner.
The 5th straight SIAC title for Albany State’s Women’s team came relatively easy as six of the top ten finishers in the 5k race to score an average time of 20:46.00. Six of the seven Albany State runners finished in the top 10 with Llonisha Lee leading the way with her time of 18:56.00. The next five ASU runners Tamika Kitchens, Robin Thomas, Asia Hollingsworth, Crystal Leamons, and Ambrosa Austin finished 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th respectively. The lone remaining ASU runner, Erica Adams, finished in 15th place. Lee who took home the crown SIAC Most Valuable Runner award also finished in 1st in 2005 at the championships and finished in 2nd last season. Tuskegee University finished in 2nd place with an overall average time of 25:14.06. Benedict College and Clark Atlanta both finished in third place. Coach Ken Taylor of Albany State was named the women’s Coach of the Year.
Morehouse continued their dominance of Cross Country in the SIAC with their 15th consecutive SIAC Cross Country title. Morehouse’s supremacy was displayed with seven of their runners finishing in the top 15 and six finishing in the top ten of all the competitors with an average time of 27:30.86. Abraham Kiprotich was the top MHC runner finishing in 2nd with a time of 26:18.60, finishing in 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th was Dreyfus Clemons, Noble Swint, Julius Hanks, Desmond Douglas, and Courtney Morris respectively. Kenneth Skinner finished in 15th place to wrap up the MHC runners. Benedict College finished in 2nd place for the 2nd consecutive year. Benedict’s Emmanuel Kirwa finished the race in 1st place and took home the honor of Most Valuable Runner finishing the course in 25:30.30. Benedict Runners Oneil Williams, Charles Chirchir, and Titus Rotich also finished in the top ten with a 3rd, 5th, and 7th place finish respectively. Kentucky State finished in 3rd for the highest finish in coach Von Smith’s tenure at KYSU. Coach Willie Hill of Morehouse was named the Men’s Coach of the Year.
Albany State’s Women and Morehouse’s Men team will compete in the NCAA Regional meet on November 3, 2007. Benedict’s Men’s and Women’s team may receive a bid amongst other SIAC schools.
