Six HBCUs begin NAIA title quest

Six Historically Black Colleges or University’s will be making a run at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics basketball national tournament titles. Four women’s teams and two men’s teams will be vying for their first basketball national championship.

Langston University (Okla.), Wiley College (Tex.), Harris-Stowe University (Mo.), and Xavier University (La.) will represent HBCUs in the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament being held in Jackson, Tenn. March 19-25, 2008. Langston enters the tournament as a No. 2 seed and a 30-1 record. The Lady Lions, who have earned their sixth tournament appearance, finished in the Elite Eight last season. Xavier University (27-6) is competing in their 13th national tournament.
The 2008 NAIA Division I Women’s National Tournament will be the second appearance for Harris-Stowe University (22-9) and the first for the Wiley College Lady Wildcats (28-6).
Langston University (Okla.) and Xavier University (La.) will represent the HBCUs during the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Tournament March 19-25, 2008, in Kansas City, Mo. Langston University (15-12) will make their third national tournament appearance after winning the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament and receiving an automatic berth. The Xavier University Gold Nuggets, who have a 24-9 record, will make their 11th appearance in the NAIA National Tournament.
