Tuskegee announces 2008 football schedule
April 4, 2008
TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Tuskegee University Football, coming off an undefeated season in 2007 (12-0) and a national black college championship, on Friday released its 2008 football schedule. The 11-game regular season includes five home games, three “classics” and three other road contests. A nine-game mandated Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule will determine the conference championship.
“This year, we have two 1AA schools (Alabama State and Alabama A&M), making it a much tougher schedule than usual, in addition to playing every school in the conference (SIAC)” said Willie Slater, head coach of the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers. “At the same time, we will deal with it and are ready to do so.”
The Golden Tigers will open the season on Sept. 5 at home when Coach Billy Joe brings his Miles Golden Bears to Abbott Stadium. The Golden Tigers will then entertain the Benedict Tigers on Sept. 13.
The road trip for the team begins the last two weeks in September, facing Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Sept. 20, and Fort Valley State University in Georgia on Sept. 27.
After an eight-year absence, in-state rival Alabama A&M returns to the Golden Tigers’ schedule. The two teams will meet in the 25th Circle City Classic on Oct. 4, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Tuskegee and Morehouse College, meeting for the 98th time, will stage their annual “tiger fight” at McClung Stadium on Oct. 11 on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in Columbus, Ga. This game will mark the 73rd Annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Football Classic.
The Golden Rams of Albany State University (Ga.) will visit Abbott Stadium on Oct. 18 and Kentucky State University on Oct. 25, which will round out play for the month. The Golden Tigers will invade Atlanta on Nov. 1 to tangle with the Panthers of Clark Atlanta University. Tuskegee will celebrate Homecoming on Nov. 8, with the Lane Dragons College Dragons (Jackson, Tenn.) meeting the Golden Tigers on the gridiron.
Regular-season play will end on Nov. 27, when the Golden Tigers meet the Alabama State University Hornets in the nation’s oldest black college football classic, the 85th Annual Turkey Day Classic in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala.
“This schedule is indeed different from last year,” Slater said. “However, every game is a big game; the past year was no different. No game is bigger than the other, even if it is a “classic.” To Tuskegee Football, it’s all just the next game on our schedule.”
