JSU Tigers Claim 20th SWAC Men's Golf Title

April 22, 2008

PHILADELPHIA, Miss. - The Jackson State University men's golf team won the 2008 Men's Golf Championship as they held off the Tigers of Texas Southern
- the 2007 champions - by eight strokes at Dancing Rabbit Golf Course. The win is the 20th for JSU head coach Eddie Payton.

The Tigers finished the tournament with a total score of 920 (308 - 298 - 314)

Leading by 21 strokes entering the final round of play, Jackson State saw its lead shrink as Texas Southern shot a team score of 301 - the second lowest team score of the tournament. However, Jackson State found a way to keep itself in front.

"We have a pretty young team and they struggled at times in the final round," said Payton. "But when it was time for them to buckle down and compete they did. It doesn't matter if you win by one or 100 shots, the objective is to win."

JSU's Albert Kilgore III received top medalist honors with a three-day total of 222 (74-73-75). Kilgore was also named the SWAC Freshman of the Year. Brett Benson was third - three strokes behind (79-73-71-225) and was named to the SWAC All-Tournament team.

Reggie Newton finished tied for 13th place, as he shot a 237 (79-76-82).
Michael Bailey tied for 15th place with a score of 238 (81-77-80) and James Cox, Jr. tied for 20th place with a score of 248 (79-87-82).

In the team competition, Jackson State and Texas Southern finished first and second, respectively. Alabama State placed third while Grambling State and Southern finished fourth and fifth.
