Four more join DRC as HBCU NFL Draftees

April 27, 2008

The second day of the 2008 NFL Draft saw four more HBCU players join Tennessee State’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie as members of the Class of 2008.

Rodgers-Cromartie, aka DRC, was selected by Arizona as the 16th pick in the first round on Saturday.
Sunday found Hampton defensive tackle Kendall Langford selected in the 3rd round by Miami.  Langford was the third pick of the round and 66th selection overall.  The 6’6, 295 lb Petersburg, VA native was two-time All-MEAC and a three-time member of the BCSP “Baad Team” of Black College All-Stars.

Winston-Salem State defensive lineman William Hayes was drafted by the Tennessee Titans as the fourth pick in the fourth round (103 overall). A 6’2”, 260-pound defensive end from High Point, North Carolina, Hayes played in 29 games for the Rams and became the first WSSU player to get drafted since Richard Huntley was taken by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the 1996 Draft.

The end of the sixth round saw Jackson State wide receiver Jaymar Johnson taken by Minnesota (193rd pick overall).  The 6’0”, 176 lb native of Gary, IN was the only offensive performer from an HBCU to be drafted.

St. Augustine’s defensive end/linebacker Alex Hall was drafted by Cleveland as the 24th pick of the seventh, and final round, and 231st selection overall.  The native of Glenarden, MD became the first Saint Augustine's College player drafted since the school restarted football in 2002. He was the only player from the CIAA selected in the draft.
