Fayetteville State 13, Saint Augustine's 10

RALEIGH, NC – Fayetteville State University needed a late interception to hold off host Saint Augustine’s College 13-10 in an important CIAA divisional football contest on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Broughton High School.
 
With the win, the Broncos (2-5, 2-2 CIAA) stay alive in the CIAA Western Division race, while the Falcons (1-6, 1-3 CIAA) drop out of contention.

The Falcons lost despite gaining more offensive total yards (362-166) and winning the possession time (34:28-25:32). But they were penalized 15 times for 149 yards while the Broncos committed two penalties for 15 yards. The Falcons entered the game leading the CIAA in most penalty yards while the Broncos are the least penalized team.
 
Despite the penalties, the Falcons were driving for the go-ahead score late in the game. But Anthony Wall of the Broncos intercepted Kevin Williams (Fayetteville, NC) inside the FSU 20-yard line with 4:06 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Falcons regained possession in their territory with less than two minutes remaining but were stopped on downs.
 
A 23-yard field goal by Eric Lamourex in the third quarter turned out to be the winning points for the Broncos, who had no turnovers. The Falcons earlier tied the score 10-10 in the second half on a 22-yard field goal by Adison Daniels (Raleigh, NC).
 
The Broncos jumped out to a 10-0 lead nearly six minutes into the game. Lamourex opened the scoring on a 27-yard field goal, and Elijah Sessoms caught an 18-yard pass from Bryan Hardy after Donte’ Wise picked off a Williams’ pass. But the Falcons tied the score 10-10 on a four-yard run by Arnold Mullins (Philadelphia, PA) in the first quarter, and Daniels’ field goal in the third quarter.
 
Offensively, Richard Medlin rushed 22 times for 86 yards for the Broncos, while Lester Graham (Fort Pierce, FL) gained 79 yards on 22 carries for the Falcons. Williams, despite two interceptions, threw for 229 yards on 10 of 26 passing and Tim Lovick (Garner, NC) caught three passes for a career-high 101 yards for the Falcons.
 
Jeff Gowdy led the Broncos with 11 tackles and Eric Conway added nine tackles. Andrade Olliver (Kenly, NC) collected nine tackles to lead the Falcons in tackling for the fifth straight week. Steven Stanback (Temple Hills, MD) added eight tackles.
 
The Falcons will attempt to regroup at home against Saint Paul’s College on Oct. 20, which is Homecoming Day. The CIAA contest will start at Broughton High School at 2 p.m.
