RALEIGH, NC - Freshman quarterback Kevin Williams tossed three touchdown passes as Saint Augustine's College entered the win column with a 23-14 victory over Virginia State University in a CIAA football game on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Broughton High School Stadium.
The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Falcons (1-5, 1-2 CIAA), who defeated the Trojans (2-4, 1-2 CIAA) for the third straight time.
The Trojans struck first with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Michael Terry to Jerome Choice on their first possession, but the Falcons responded with a 67-yard scoring pass from Williams to Lendell Bembo (Tallahassee, FL) later in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Falcons gained a 13-7 lead on a 10-yard toss from Williams to Richard Abney (Capital Heights, MD). Adison Daniels (Raleigh, NC) kicked a 24-yard field goal to extend the Falcon lead to 16-7 right before halftime.
The Trojans closed the gap to 16-14 on a five-yard pass from Terry to Antoine Morton in the third quarter, but Williams' third touchdown pass, this time to Jone' White (Fairfield, CA) for 24 yards, stretched the Falcon lead to 23-14 in the fourth quarter which turned out to be the final score.
Williams threw for 194 yards and freshman tailback Arnold Mullins (Philadelphia, PA) rushed for 91 yards on 23 carries for the Falcons, who overcame four turnovers with 346 yards of total offense. The Panthers, led by 179 passing yards and two touchdowns from Terry, gained 310 yards of total offense but the Falcons forced four turnovers including three Terry interceptions.
Freshman linebacker Andrade Olliver (Kenly, NC) led the Falcons with 13 tackles and freshman Jamel Moore (Fayetteville, NC) added eight tackles. Defensive end Alex Hall, a returning All-American, tallied seven tackles including 1.5 sacks and two quarterback hurries after sitting out last week against Virginia Union University with a neck stinger. Isaac Mitchell sparked the Trojans with 14 tackles and LaQuentin Milo added 10 tackles.
The Falcons will attempt to win two games in a row when they host Fayetteville State University in the second of three straight home games at Broughton High School. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
