Cheyney earned their first win of the season on the strength oF junior wide receiver Dominique Curry’s six receptions for 193 yards including a pair of touchdowns.
The Wolves jumped out on top 13-0 scoring on their first two possessions.
Cheyney (1-4) received the opening kick-off and marched 69 yards in eight plays capped by a Derrick Murry nine yard strike to Eric Frazier. On the afternoon Murry was 15 of 26 with three touchdowns. After stopping Lock Haven (0-5) on three plays, the Bald Eagles pinned the Wolves back on their on four yard line.
On the Wolves first play from scrimmage, Curry received an innocent little hitch pass and went 96 yards down the right sideline for the score. Kicker Andrew Effiong missed his first point after of the season. On the Bald Eagles ensuing possession they found the end zone on a Gerald Thompson two yard rush up the middle. On their next possession, the Wolves were forced to punt from deep in the own half only to see the snap go over the kicker’s head out of the end zone for a safety to make the score 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Wolves added to their lead at the 9:59 mark of the second quarter on a 25 yard field goal by Effiong. However, on their next drive the Bald Eagles Jason Eby’s one yard rushed tied the game at 16. Lock Haven took the lead as the halftime whistle blew on a 38 yard field goal by Marc Domonkos.
After a scoreless third quarter Curry once again found the end zone. This time Murry threw a perfect fade to Curry in the corner to put the Wolves on top 23-19 with 8:37 left to play. Cheyney’s Joe Okafor capped the scoring as he picked up a fumble and rambled 75 yards for the score.
On defensive the Wolves were led by Brandon Hawkins and Justin Allen. The linebackers recorded 13 tackles apiece. Lock Haven looking for the right combination used three quarterbacks on the afternoon. Together they were 10 of 23 with two interceptions. Lock Haven committed 17 penalties for 143 yards. The Bald Eagles were led by Ibrahim Smith. The tailback rushed for 118 yards on 23 carries. The two Cheyney turnovers were a season low. Cheyney will play their final non-conference game next Saturday at Howard. Kick-off is 1:00 pm. Lock Haven will travel to Edinboro.
