September 22, 2007
Itta Bena, Miss. --- The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils football team return home was less than spectacular as they suffered a 50-16 loss to the Tigers of Jackson State before a capacity crowd of 11,798 in the Delta Devil’s Rice-Totten Stadium.
Valley looked good early holding the Tigers to a 27-yard field goal on the games opening drive. They took a brief lead later in the quarter, 7-6, on a four yard Ronald Brewer touchdown run.
After Jackson added another field goal, Delta Devils linebacker Marc Moody returned a Tiger fumble 25 yards to push Valley’s lead to 13-7, to end the Delta Devils scoring until Jamie Whitworth connected on a 25-yard field with 26 seconds remaining in the game.
The Delta Devils (1-3, 1-3 SWAC E) where led by Brewer, who rushed over a hundred yards in consecutive games, with 28 carries for 148 yards. Receiver Abner Brown had five catches for 42 yards.
Defensively Kevin Golden led Valley with two solo and four assisted tackles for a total of six with a pass break up.
The Tigers (2-2, 2-0 SWAC E) were led by quarterback Jimmy Oliver who had 262 yards on 15-of-23 passing with a score. On defense Malcolm Palmer led all tacklers with a total of 12. Palmer also had a fumble recovery and a blocked kick.
The Delta Devils will be open next weekend before returning to the road, October 6th, to take on the Tigers of Grambling State University.
