INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State scored late in the third quarter and added another touchdown early in the fourth and held off a late Fairmont State rally to defeat the Falcons, 14-7, Saturday afternoon at Lakin Field. Both defenses slugged it out for most of the day, but the Yellow Jackets passing game proved to be the difference as WVSU quarterback Kevin O'Brien threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns.
While the Falcons (2-1, 0-1 WVIAC) held WV State (2-0, 1-0 WVIAC) to just 38 yards rushing, FSU managed just five total rushing yards themselves. The Yellow Jackets finished the game with 273 yards of total offense, while Fairmont State had 171.
FSU quarterback Derek Taylor completed 13-of-36 passes for 166 yards and threw two interceptions. Allen Jewell was his favorite target on the afternoon catching eight passes for 85 yards.
Defensively for the Falcons, Vince Black led the way with 12 tackles, including two for a loss. He also forced and recovered one fumble. Brandon Geary had 11 tackles, including a pair of sacks.
O’Brien was 24-of-39 for 235 yards and two touchdowns. Jermain King caught six passes for 66 yards, David Parsons hauled in five passes for 64 yards, and Mike Jones had five receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown. Flen Sistrunk caught one pass out of the back field for a six yard touchdown.
