For the second straight week, the Tennessee State University Tigers claimed a victory at the end of the game on the foot of junior kicker Eric Benson. Benson’s 43 yd FG with 0:09 remaining to bring TSU into a 26-26 tie at Austin Peay State in Clarksville, TN. His PAT kick in OT gave the Tigers a 33-32 win over the previously undefeated Governors.
In the ensuing OT, Austin Peay scored on their first possession, but DB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie blocked the Governors PAT, to allow just a six-point lead at 32-26. The Tigers’ Javarris Williams powered the football over for a TD on TSU’s possession and Benson calmly booted the PAT for the winning point in the game.
In the game, there were ten fumbles, six by TSU and four by APSU with each team losing three and each team returning one for a TD (TSU-73, APSU-64).
The Tigers generated 471 yards in Total Offense (238 rush, 233 pass) while holding the OVC leading Governors to 245 yds in Total Offense (102 rush, 143 pass). TSU had two runners reach the 100 yards rushing in the game, Terrence Wright (106) and Javarris Williams (100). QB Antonio Heffner passed for 233 yards (19-27) and 1 TD, running for 27 yards. WR Chris Johnson gained 81 yds on 5 catches and 1 TD (27 yds).
Defensively, LB Kalvin Baker had his best game of the season finishing the game with 9 tackles (3 solo). DE Shaun Richardson had five tackles, with 4 TFL’s, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble return for a 73 yd TD, two sacks (16) and 1 QB hurry.
Tennessee State (2-1) will travel to play the Southern Jaguars in Baton Rouge, LA next week (9/22/07).
