ETTRICK, VA -- Virginia State University recorded their first shutout in football in five years as the Trojans downed George Mason University 48-0 in VSU's home opener on Saturday in Ettrick, Va.
VSU's last shutout came when the Trojans defeated Saint Augustine's College 52-0 on September 28, 2002.
VSU got the scoring started at 10:44 in the first quarter when Trojan quarterback Michael Terry called his own number and took the ball in from one yard out.
On the next series of plays, Donnie Avant blocked a George Mason punt and Devon Wiggins picked it up and scampered in from 20 yards out.
Terry would throw two touchdown passes on the day, giving him a career total of 28 scoring strikes.
VSU's Nick Fleming rushed of 114 yards and two touchdowns.
The win raised VSU's record to 1-2 on the season while George Mason dropped to 0-2.
