November 3, 2007

From SAC Sports Information

DURHAM, NC - Saint Augustine's College ended a disappointing football season with a 17-3 CIAA loss to crosstown rival Shaw University on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Durham County Stadium.

The Falcons (2-8, 2-5 CIAA) were co-favorites to win the CIAA Western Division, but the Bears (7-3, 6-1) claimed the title instead. The Bears face Virginia Union University in the CIAA Championship Game in Charlotte, NC on Nov. 10. The Falcons, meanwhile, posted their worst record since the 2002 season when they were 0-8.

With the Bears and Falcons boasting the CIAA's No. 1 and No. 3 defenses, respectively, the contest turned into a defensive battle as expected. The Bears led 14-3 at halftime on short touchdown runs by Alan Atwater and Raymond Williams. Adison Daniels (Raleigh, NC) scored the Falcons' only points on a 17-yard field goal. Ryne Powell of Shaw kicked a 45-yard field goal in the third quarter for the final score.

Freshman tailback Arnold Mullins (Philadelphia, PA) led the Falcons with 99 yards on 17 carries, and sophomore quarterback Anthony Brown (Pittsburgh, PA) threw for 211 yards. The Falcons gained more total offensive yards (265-223) but committed three turnovers and 10 penalties for 114 yards. The Falcons were 0 of 10 on third-down conversions.

Senior defensive end Alex Hall (Glenarden, MD) ended his college career with a stellar game. Hall collected 8 tackles including 2 sacks. Freshman linebacker Andrade Olliver (Kenly, NC) led the Falcons with 9 tackles, and junior defensive tackle Marcus Kennedy (Georgetown, SC) and senior defensive end Cedric Clark (Statesville, NC) each had 8 tackles. The Falcons recorded four sacks.

Alan Atwater led Shaw with 74 yards on 14 carries, and Galen Houston collected 9 tackles as the Bears amassed 5 sacks. The Bears, who fumbled once and committed 14 penalties for 118 yards, were 5 of 17 on third-down conversions.
