Grambling State 57, Texas Southern 9

October 27, 2007

Brandon Landers threw a career-high five touchdown passes and Clyde Edwards became Grambling State’s career record holder for touchdown receptions in Grambling’s 57-9 rout over Texas Southern University on Saturday afternoon at Robinson Stadium.

After stopping TSU on its initial possession, Grambling State quickly satisfied the capacity homecoming crowd with a six-play drive that was capped off by Cornelius Walker’s 27-yard touchdown run. Grambling State’s defense came up big with a fumble recovery on the ensuing drive and moved ahead 14-0 when running back Frank Warren found the endzone from seven yards out. With the game in GSU’s grasp early on, the focus of the contest quickly turned historic as wideout Clyde Edwards cemented his name in GSU football history.

Edwards, a senior from Houston, Texas, tied former GSU wide receiver Scotty Anderson for career touchdown receptions after recording a 3-yard pass from Landers at the 1:53 mark in the first quarter. Several minutes into the second half, Edwards sat alone at the top as he broke free from the TSU defense and caught a 36-yard reception from Landers for his 35th career reception and a 27-0 GSU lead in the second quarter.

Grambling State went into the half ahead 37-0 behind the strength of a Tim Manuel field goal and touchdown reception from Reginald Jackson. Several minutes into the second half, Edwards added to his mark with a 58-yard reception and the rout was on as GSU added to its lead with touchdowns by Tim Abney and Nick Lewis in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

For the game, GSU churned out a season-high 544 total offensive yards (274 P, 274 R) while TSU finished with 291 (291 P, 20 R). Landers threw for 223 yards and five touchdowns on 13-of-19 passing while Warren rushed for 146 yards on 17 carries. Edwards topped all wide receivers with five receptions for 102 yards and three touchdowns.
