SWAC announces 2007 men's conference basketball honors

The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2007
All- Conference Honors for men’s basketball: Jackson State’s Trey
Johnson and Alabama A&M’s Mickell Gladness claimed
the top honors for the conference.
The 2007 SWAC Player of the Year, Johnson – a 6-foot-5,
218-pound, senior from Jackson, Mississippi – led the conference
in scoring and was second in the nation averaging 27.1 points
per game. He also finished the season averaging 4.5 rebounds,
2.52 assists, and 0.8 steals per game. He scored 49 points at
Texas-El Paso including the game winner during the Sun Bowl Tournament.
He also had 11 30-point outings on the season.
Named the 2007 SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, Gladness,
a 6-foot-11, 205-pound, junior from Sylacauga, Alabama was one
of the nation’s toughest defender in the paint. Leading
the conference in blocked shots, his 188 rejections – an
average of 6.3 blocks per game – led the nation. He also
averaged 7.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 0.5 steals per game. Against
Texas Southern in late February, he set the NCAA single-game
high with 16 blocks. He then came back in the next game and turned
back 13 shots. In fact, over a four-game stretch, he had 47 blocked
shots.
The SWAC Freshman of the Year is Alabama A&M’s Trant
Simpson. Simpson – a 6-foot, 165-pound freshman from Huntsville,
AL – came on strong towards the end of the season. He finished
the season averaging 13.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, 6.0 assists and
1.6 steals. He had 25 points, seven rebounds, and 10 assists
against Prairie View A&M. He also had 21 points, five rebounds,
nine assists and three steals at Texas Southern.
The SWAC Newcomer of the Year is Prairie View A&M’s
Brain Ezeh. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound, junior from Houston Texas
claimed the conference newcomer of the week twice. He averaged
10.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
He had a 28-point, six-rebound, one-block, one-steal effort at
Grambling State.
