"Stillman officially announces that Dr. W. Curtis Williams is no longer employed as the school’s athletic director, effective January 5, 2007," the statement said.
Williams had been in the position for just 17 months joining the staff in July, 2005 soon after the school's application for Division II status was approved.
He brought more than 20 years of experience to the job with stints at Elizabeth City State, Alabama State, Albany State, and Texas Southern. He came to Stillman from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where he was chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
Williams' tenure had not been without controversy.
Soon after he arrived, Theo Danzy, who had been head coach during the revitalization of football at the school, was reassigned.
Danzy's offensive coordinator, Greg Thompson, was then hired, fired and rehired over the next 12 months.
Head women's coach Sherri Harris was let go at the end of the 2005-06 season after just two years on the job and
men's basketball coach Leon Douglass left to become head coach at Tuskegee after taking Stillman to its first-ever SIAC Basketball Championship.
