2006 SWAC Football All-Conference Selections announced

In a procedure voted on by the league’s football coaches and sports information directors, the Southwestern Athletic Conference announces its 2006 football all-conference honors. Receiving top honors were quarterback Chris Wallace of Arkansas-Pine Bluff and defensive back Stacey Thomas of Texas Southern.
Named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year, Wallace, a 6-foot-1, 180-lb., junior from Kankakee, IL, finished the season first in the conference in passing efficiency with a mark of 169.8 (2nd in Division I-AA). He was also second in the SWAC averaging 179.8 passing yards per game and third in total offense averaging 195.4 yards per contest. Wallace completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 1,978 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Tabbed the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, Thomas, a 6-foot, 200-lb., senior defensive back from New Orleans, was one of the top defensive backs in the conference. His 114 tackles ranked him first in the conference while also notching 5 ½ tackles for loss. He had one sack, four fumble recoveries and 11 passes defended – including five interceptions.
The 2006 SWAC Newcomer of the Year is Arkansas-Pine Bluff receiver/return specialist Dedrick Poole. The 6-foot, senior led the conference in all-purpose yards averaging 150.3 yards per game (10th in NCAA Division I-AA). He set the school record for longest run from scrimmage with a 97-yard run against Grambling State. Poole finished with 33 carries for 240 yards and five touchdowns along with 29 receptions for 504 yards and four touchdowns. As a kick returner, he returned 22 kickoffs for 591 yards and 14 punts for 168 yards.
Alabama A&M’s Ulysses Banks finishes the season as the 2006 SWAC Freshman of the Year. The 5-foot-10, 195-lb., running back/return specialist from Birmingham, AL, played in nine games this season. On 12 kickoff return opportunities, he averaged 35.4 yards per return while returning two kickoffs for touchdowns. He gained 425 yards on 12 returns with a long of 99. He finished the season first in Division I-AA in kick returns.
