“While we hate to lose Chuck Bell as athletics director, his decision to step down is a clear reflection of the importance he places on his family. As an institution we respect and support him in that,” said DSU President Allen L. Sessoms. “The University appreciates Chuck Bell’s commitment to facilitate as smooth a transition as possible by remaining in his leadership post until a new athletics director is hired.”
Dr. Sessoms noted that since Mr. Bell’s arrival in July 2005, his leadership has resulted in numerous improvements and accomplishments in DSU Department of Athletics, including: the installation of new turf and lighting at Alumni Stadium, the establishment of an Women’s Equestrian Team to address Title IX requirements, the upgrading of four head coaching posts from part-time to full-time, and the construction start of a Strength and Conditioning Facility and Wellness Center.
The DSU president added that under Bell’s watch, Department of Athletics achieved NCAA re-certification that was a result of addressing student-athletes welfare issues, particularly the revamping of the sports medicine and training room department; and the University has enhanced the development of student-athletes through the expansion and strengthening of athletics academic support services and the establishment of the CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes’ Minds and Personal Success) Program.
“Under Chuck Bell’s leadership, our student-athletes have been put in a better position to succeed both academically and in their sports pursuits through his reorganization of our Department of Athletics,” Dr. Sessoms said. “The next AD will assume his post in a much improved athletics environment.”
Mr. Bell said his 20-month tenure at Delaware State University has been a professionally satisfying experience.
“I appreciate the vision the president has for athletics at the University and it has been a privilege to play a role in advancing those goals,” Mr. Bell said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to work in support of the DSU student-athletes and especially to experience the exciting success of the football, men and women’s basketball and other DSU sports programs.”
Mr. Bell said his immediate plan is to remain in his post to continue to provide stable leadership and assist in a smooth transition. “I have promised the DSU president that I would not leave until the University had a new AD,” he said.
