Bowie State 24, Saint Paul's 0

(LAWRENCEVILLE, VIRGINIA) Bowie State’s Bulldogs took control of the game early and went on to an easy 24-0 shutout of Saint Paul’s College. The win evens the Bowie State record at 4-4 overall (2-3 CIAA).

Bowie State’s Joshua Miller blocked a Shaun Gutierrez punt and returned it 25 yards for a Bulldogs touchdown at the 12:46 mark of the opening quarter. John Riley added the extra point to give Bowie State a 7-0 lead. Nathaniel Queen recorded his sixth touchdown of the season with 17 seconds remaining in the first half, rushing for a two yard TD. Riley converted the extra point, pushing the visitors lead to 14-0.

The Bulldogs increased their lead to 17-0 with 2:18 left in the third quarter on a 31-yard field goal by Riley. Bowie State scored its final points of the afternoon with 8:52 left in the game on a Lamar Manigo to Sean Napper 21 yard pass and catch. Riley converted his third extra point of the contest, making the score 24-0.

As a team, Saint Paul’s managed only 142 yards in total offense with quarterback Prentis Williams leading the Tigers with 96 passing. Bowie State on the other, accounted for 237 yards of total offense (122 rushing and 115 passing). Manigo was BSU’s top offensive producer, completing seven of 16 passes for 117 yards. The Bulldogs ground game was led by Queen’s 100 rushing yards on 28 carries. Bowie State’s Napper led all receivers with 61 yards on three catches. Turnovers played a major role in the Saint Paul’s loss as the Tigers fumble the ball five times (losing four) and was intercepted three times. Bowie State was also in the giving mood, fumbling twice and intercepted once.

The Saint Paul’s defense was led by Jeremy Bell and Clinton Gee with 10 tackles each and Mario Woods added another nine tackles for the Tigers. Terrence Stafford paced the Bulldogs with six tackles.

Saint Paul’s (2-6 / 1-4 CIAA) will entertain Elizabeth City Sate next Saturday (10/28) while Bowie State welcomes Virginia Union to BSU’s Bulldog Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
