CHARLOTTE, NC Running back Travoris Carter rushed for a season-high 110 yards and a touchdown and defensive end Alex Hall registered 4.5 sacks as Saint Augustine’s College topped Johnson C. Smith 15-9 Saturday, October, 14, 2006 at Irwin Belk Complex to snap a four-game losing football streak. The Falcons (2-5, 2-3 CIAA) also broke the Golden Bulls (5-2, 3-2 CIAA) three-game win streak in the process. Johnson C. Smith entered the CIAA football contest ranked ninth in the Southeast Region.
“We’ve been struggling but you’ve got to keep fighting,” said Falcons’ Coach Michael Costa, whose team has endured a challenging schedule including losses to nationally-ranked Carson-Newman and North Carolina Central. “We kept pushing and fighting and never gave up. We showed strength.” Defensive back Marsean Chestnut scored the eventual game-winning touchdown on a three-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter. Carter scored the two-point conversion on a run to give the Falcons a 15-9 lead with 9:13 remaining in the game. The Falcons’ defense, which held Johnson C. Smith to minus 15 rushing, prevented the Golden Bulls from scoring the remainder of the game.
For the game, the Falcons’ defense allowed 107 total offensive yards. Hall tallied 10 tackles including 6 tackles for losses in addition to his 4.5 sack total. Middle linebacker Kevin Jones led the Falcons with 11 tackles.
Carter scored on an 8-yard run in the third quarter that erased a 3-0 Johnson C. Smith halftime lead. Addison Daniels converted the extra point attempt to put the Falcons ahead 7-3 with 12:07 in the third quarter.
The Golden Bulls regained the lead when Eddie Minter caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Donja’ Goodson with 4:16 in the third quarter. The extra point attempt failed, however, and the score remained 9-7 in favor of the Golden Bulls.
The lead stood until Chestnut scored in the fourth quarter after Richard Boone’s punt was downed at the Golden Bulls’ 1-yard line.
Carter sparked the Falcons’ rushing attack which gained a season-high 132 rushing yards. He is the first Falcons’ rusher to gain over 100 yards this season.
The Falcons return to home for a homecoming game Saturday, October 21, 2006 against Livingstone College at Broughton High School. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
